Hawar Islands Development Company was established in February 2007 as a closed shareholding company; it is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mumtalakat. The main objective of the company is to develop the islands and the neighbouring areas in order to attract potential investors to support and grow market opportunities related to eco-tourism and related services. The Hawar Islands are a group of six major and 13 smaller islands located 24 kilometres south-west of Bahrain. The total land area exceeds 50 square kilometers, with Hawar Island the main land mass covering 40 square kilometres. The key objectives of the company are to:
 
•  Create an international sustainable landmark site to promote Bahrain’s heritage and       culture;
•  Create a major attraction site for regional and international tourists;
•  Promote a high quality eco-tourism development and activities;
•  Develop a world class sustainable community;
•  Enhance and promote the quality of the existing unique natural environment and          resources; and
•  Contribute to the area's tourist promotion inside and outside Bahrain.
